THINK small

“When I see what great consequences lie out of small things… I’m tempted to believe that there are no small things.”

The world, it seems, is these days fascinated by small. Small is the in thing or rather small is the big thing. The most apparent example with us is the television. A small invention, a small platform for the budding talent is now abode of the already rich and established actors and actresses. You name it you have it. The biggest uproar was generated when Mr. Amitabh Bacchan agreed for ‘Kaun Banega Crore Pati” and was quoted as “Big B scumbles” and today there is hardly any bollywood superstar who is lagging behind the race to be on television. Sharukh, Salmaan, Urmila, Ajey and Kajol, Anupam Kher to name a few big stars who are these days decorating the living rooms on the so called small screen.

And those like Rani Mukherjee, who probably still have some years before she herself showcases on the ‘Idiot box’, has launched her production company making daily soaps for the television, in the footsteps of Ekta Kapoor.

There is hardly anyone who would deny the immense reach of television which has caused this phenomenon, which to me is so similar to the business lexicon ‘reverse outsourcing’. Now the question is not ‘Do you have television at home?’ but its rather ‘How many televisions do you have at home?’ and if per chance you get ‘none’ for an answer you’d stare at the gentleman as if to find, which, either of his two eyes is fake.

That’s not the end of small wonders. In a recent advertisement of Nokia mobiles you’ll be surprised to discover that Rabbi Shergill, singer of ‘Bulla ki Jaana Main Kaun’ fame has chosen the N series of Nokia to launch his new album… and entries to make a video for his songs, shot on your mobile are already invited on the site. Day is not far when we’ll have movie premiers in the same way or probably it’s already going on somewhere.

The love for the small is seen everywhere. The biggest news during the month of January was about the ‘small’ car appropriately named as Nano…showcased in autoexpo 2008 in Delhi, small if not in size then at least in budget. Small books over rules the so called standard textbooks in colleges also and the irony is that the first two lines of this blog are also picked from one the prefaces of my textbook of dental radiology which was a favorite substitute for its mightier counter parts during my college days, like many others.

Even philosophy doesn’t rule out small things and wise men are often heard preaching ‘Zindigi ki badi khusi choti choti khusiyon se banti hai’ ‘A big happy life is made out of small small happy moments.’

Leaving philosophy and looking into the materialistic world again, there is hardly any company which denies the power of small. Sachets of shampoo, oils all come in small sizes and a known strategy to lure customers. The recent marketing strategy introduced by one of the leading paint companies… if I’m not wrong Asian Paints… is to let you take home small samples of the shades and try before fixing the ‘Mera waala green’ on your walls.

Well, the influence of small is big and is going bigger… and saying ‘Think Small’ is rather a Big Statement.
